Prior to 1997, media assets were tested in malls, focus group facilities, on VHS or in local cable markets. Each had their own pros and cons, and all were expensive. Online research was starting to take off, and our clients loved the access to our large and targeted samples with the cost efficiency and speed that online research had to offer. However, they believed testing video was not a reality due to the slow connection speeds at that time.
E-Poll identified a CD-ROM technology that could be adapted to online video testing which allowed consistent viewing experiences across all computers and offered excellent viewing quality. We then eliminated the concern about copy protection with a security device that was controlled within our survey software. Therefore, the respondent could view up to an hour or more of video that was encrypted and could not store or pass on the video to someone else.
Fast forward to 2008. Broadband penetration is estimated to be 60% and there are still issues of representation and consistency across multiple computing platforms and browsers. Many online video products out there use "broadband only" samples or require the respondent to have specific operating systems or current software versions. Even video presented in a broadband format will have inconsistencies because of great variances in service speeds and "time of day" issues.
