Is there still a doctor in the house?

The TV doctor has been a source of fascination among viewers since the beginning of television. The father of all medical dramas was "Medic," which premiered more than a half century ago in 1954. The advent of the sexy doctor wasn’t until 1961 with Richard Chamberlain as Dr. Kildare. Even today, doctors are still some of the most appealing characters to watch. In E-Poll’s E-Score® Character Study, four doctors made the top ten most liked list among adults 18-49. The characteristics that drive the appeal of today’s TV doctors have changed somewhat since 1954. Dr. Gregory House and Marcus Welby would have little in common. First, two of the four most appealing doctors are women. And while it’s still important that TV doctors are considered "intelligent" and "attractive," the top doctors today are just as likely to be described as "aggressive."

What do consumers consider a top brand?

A Leader High Quality Relevant to me

These are the qualities that leading brands in most categories share.

In the apparel sector some of the top-rated, and top revenue producing brands are Levi Strauss, Hanes and Nike. In E-Poll’s E-Score® Brand study, each of these brands was rated “a leader,” and “high quality” by close to half of consumers – higher than any other apparel brand tested. Consumers are most likely to think Hanes and Levi’s are “relevant” to them. Nike is also one of the brands most likely to be considered “cutting edge,” “innovative” and “influential,” while Levi’s and Hanes strength lies in their perception as “reliable,” “down to earth,” “practical,” and “trustworthy.” What are some of the opportunities for these brands or other brands trying to grab market share? While well regarded, Hanes and Levi’s are not considered as distinctive as other apparel brands – they fall below on “unique” and “distinctive” measures.

APPAREL BRAND RANKINGS:

Rank "A Leader" "High Quality" "Relevant to Me" "Distinctive"
1 Nike Donna Karan Hanes Victoria's Secret

Among autos, Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet/GM, and Ford are ranked domestically at the top of most other auto brands in terms of market share. All four brands are considered “a leader” by consumers, with Toyota and Honda ranking highest. Toyota and Honda are also most likely to be considered “high quality” and “relevant to me.” Overall, the cars most likely to be considered “high quality” are foreign brands, including Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar, with Toyota and Honda leading the pack. American cars are less likely to be perceived as “high quality” and “innovative” and have an opportunity to craft their messaging in a way that highlights the quality and new styling of their vehicles. By countering the perception of their brands as out of date, American cars will likely improve their ranking in the key drivers of "leadership," "quality" and "relevance" among consumers.

AUTO BRAND RANKINGS:

1 Toyota Lexus Toyota Toyota Mercury
2 Mercedes BMW Honda Honda Chevrolet/GM
