What TV Programs Do Viewers Recommend?

Word-of-mouth has been acknowledged for many years as a major influence on how people first learn about new shows and may even influence whether they tune in. The growing importance and power of word-of-mouth promotion is undeniable given an environment increasingly cluttered with advertising, and more cynical, media savvy consumers. In the world of television, where so many program options exist, the built-in credibility of word-of-mouth is particularly invaluable.

Each of the programs listed below generate higher than average word-of-mouth recommendations when compared to other prime time programs on broadcast television. The average score for the 100 programs tested in this study is 20%.

Next Generation of TV Stars?

Box office heavyweights such as Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Michael J. Fox, Jennifer Aniston, Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler all got their start on the small screen. What qualities do these performers possess that help propel their multi-hyphenate careers? First, they generate some of the highest appeal and awareness scores among consumers in the 18 to 49 demo. Second, they are most often described as "funny" and "talented". Many lesser known TV personalities are equally admired by a smaller, but loyal following and could become the next generation of A-list stars. Not surprisingly, these actors are typically recognized by image, and not as often by name. Besides having high overall appeal, they mirror many of the same critical attributes of their more well known colleagues and have the potential to command a larger audience.

E-Poll has identified these television performers using Celebrity E-Score, which assesses celebrity awareness, appeal and attributes among the general population. The actors below were selected based on having high appeal scores (above 30% "Like a lot" - average appeal for all TV actors is 18% "Like a lot") and lower awareness for the television actor/actress category (under 30% "Aware") among 18 to 49 year old consumers.
